New Year's Day...

It's New Year's Day, and Phil and Liz have just over a month until they disappear off on a bit of a bike ride. This is Phil testing whether he has the remotest clue as to how to post a blog. January's going to be a busy one... here goes!

Summary of the Trip...

On February 3rd 2010, we flew on one-way tickets from London to Buenos Aires. After a few days in BA, we made our way by bus around 3000km South towards Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego - the southernmost point of Argentina, and the most southerly city in the world.

From there, we began cycling North, but after a week on the road, half way across Tierra del Fuego, 80kph winds became an irresistible force. We had to take ourselves and our bikes by bus 2000km up to Bariloche, in the Lake District. This allowed us to escape the worst of the wind and spend time on running repairs.

From Argentina's Lake District, we cycled North, with our world strapped onto our bikes. Our original objective was to cycle the Americas, from South to North, by the end of the year. However, it soon became apparent that if we were to avoid becoming obsessive, wind-battered mental/physical wrecks, unable to appreciate properly much of what we passed through, this would need some trimming and selectivity.

We therefore decided to cycle as far as Lima, through all of Argentina North of Bariloche, through Bolivia, across the Andes, down to Chile, and then up the Peruvian coast to Lima, arriving in late August. This took us more than 6000km through some of the most varied, most beautiful, highest and harshest terrains in the world.

From Lima, we took a bus up to Guayaquil in Ecuador, where we hopped over to the incredible Galapagos Islands for a few days. From Guayaquil, we flew to Seattle, and took a train to Vancouver, where we remounted our bikes and rode 3000km South - across the border into the USA, and all the way down the West coast of America to the Mexican border.

In mid-November, we flew back to Argentina. 9000km into our journey, and began the final leg from Bariloche back down South towards Tierra del Fuego. We battled fierce and unpredictable winds as far as we could down the East coast of Argentina, and finally decided our ´finish line´ would be the historic, windswept port of Puerto Deseado. We arrived there on December 18th, after 10,325km on the bikes.

On 10th January 2010, we landed back in London, 3 days after getting engaged in Buenos Aires.
